Nokia’s smartphone business may be in Microsoft’s hands now, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to turn its back on Android. A Nokia X event scheduled for  June 24 suggests the company has a new Android-powered device on the way, just four months after it unveiled the original Nokia X family at Mobile World Congress.

Its lackluster 3-megapixel camera means the Nokia X will never be considered a point-and-shoot killer like Nokia’s Windows Phone smartphones are — but that doesn’t mean Nokia neglected its camera software. Quite the opposite, in fact.

The affordable handset has a pretty snazzy camera app, and you can now try it out for yourself on your existing Android smartphone.

If you’re thinking about picking up a Nokia X, but you’re put off by its heavily modified Android operating system, then you’ll be pleased to know that the first custom ROM with pure Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is now available.

It’s free from all of Nokia’s own tweaks, delivering a stock experience exactly as Google intended it — and so far everything appears to be working seamlessly.

Nokia X

The Nokia X smartphone has reportedly received its first Android update with some subtle improvements in tow. Notable among the changes is the ability to change the colors of the live tiles of the handset. This is a welcome addition to the device, as customization was previously quite limited.

Nokia Apps

Although the newly announced Nokia X devices run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, they are quite different from a run of the mill Android smartphone. Instead of relying on Google’s services, Nokia has decided to go with its own unique UI layering and set of apps. And now, these services can be ported onto any Android device of your choice thanks to a developer over at the XDA forums. Last week, we saw the Nokia X Appstore leaking out in the same fashion.
