After giving the world a glimpse at Android Wear back in March, Google has finally revealed its new OS meant for wearables. Android Wear, detailed Wednesday at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, is a true OS for smartwatches that will offer many advanced features like synced notifications, the ability to control other devices around you and constant display of relevant information based on the wearer’s location.

Unless Apple surprises the world with the speedy release of its long-rumored iWatch, it looks like Android Wear smartwatches will win the race for wrist supremacy. In other words, they’ll be your first “iWatch.” Here’s what the Google-powered devices will offer.

A report has appeared online disclosing that HTC is currently in the process of designing its first ever smartwatch, with the name One Wear, as a rival to Motorola’s upcoming Moto 360. The wearable piece of technology was recently demoed at a private manufacturers event and is scheduled to hit the shelves somewhere around late August to early September.

Having sold half a million Galaxy Gear smartwatches already this year, Samsung has claimed a whopping 71 percent of the global smartwatch market. The South Korean company’s wearables, often branded a “flop” by critics, are taking advantage of the lack of competition to gain an early lead over incoming rivals.

I couldn’t be more excited for the Android Wear platform, and indeed one of its first supporters, the G Watch from LG. Both of which look ready to revolutionize the smartwatch, which, until now, has been somewhat lacking and in dire need of improvement.

To remind us that the G Watch is well on its way, LG today released a new one-minute teaser trailer, which makes the wearable’s impressive feature-set its focus.

Instagram addicts with a Sony SmartWatch 2 can now get comments and likes delivered directly to their wrists. Sony today released a new “Smart extension for Instagram” app that’s available for free from Google Play, and it provides instant Instagram alerts that you won’t need a smartphone to read.
