Google launched a redesigned Google Play service last week, with a brand new look that better fits Android’s latest Holo user interface guidelines. The update is also intended to make it easier for you to discover apps, games, magazines, and other content, and it’s rolling out to Android devices now.

If you haven’t yet received the update — maybe because you’re outside of the U.S. — and you’re tired of waiting, you can install it manually. Here’s how.

Police officers in New York now have instant access to a wealth of criminal information on the go thanks to a new Android app. Feed it an address and the app returns the names of every resident with an open warrant, arrest record, or previous summons; the names of residents with orders of protection against them and those who own a gun; and the photographs of every parolee in the building.

Microsoft is planning a new lineup of Surface tablets that includes a 7-inch model designed to compete with Apple’s iPad mini and Google’s Nexus 7, The Wall Street Journal reports. The device will enter mass production later this year, according to people familiar with Microsoft’s plans, but it’s unclear when the company will bring the new slate to market.

Samsung has today announced its estimated earnings for Q1 2013, and it looks like the Korean electronics giant is set for another record quarter, exceeding Wall Street expectations. The company has forecast a 53% rise in profit to 8.7 trillion won ($7.7 billion) for the three-month period between January and March, driven by smartphone sales.
