HTC_One_Google-FEATURED

HTC finally confirmed on Thursday that it will be launching an HTC One Google Edition powered by stock Android on June 26. The question many existing One owners are asking now is whether they’ll be able to download and install that stock ROM onto the devices they’ve already purchased.

According to an HTC spokesman, that could be a possibility.

HTC has denied that it is working on a “Google Edition” HTC One with stock Android, but it seems the Taiwanese company may have simply been trying to cover it up.

Earlier this week, one source claimed such a device is in the works, and now the same claim — this time from multiple different sources — has started circulating again. According to the latest rumor, an HTC One with stock Android will be announced within the next two weeks.

It took less than 60 minutes for HTC One “Google edition” rumors to begin circulating after Google announced the Galaxy S4 with stock Android at Google I/O last Wednesday. HTC was quick to dismiss those rumors and state that it had no plans for such a device, but according to one source, that’s false.

They claim an HTC One with stock Android is in the works, and that it’ll launch this summer.

Galaxy-S4-unlocked-bootloader

Earlier this week, we reported that the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S4 had a locked bootloader, and that meant it would be unlikely we would ever see custom ROMs like CyanogenMod for the new Android flagship. But just days later, developers have already successfully unlocked the bootloader.

They won’t be releasing the unlock to the public for another month, however.

Samsung smartphones have always had plenty of support from custom ROMs like CyanogenMod, allowing owners who hate the TouchWiz user interface to replace it with something a little more like barebones Android. But Galaxy S4 owners on AT&T may not have that luxury.

According to CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik, the AT&T Galaxy S4 comes with a locked bootloader, which could rule out the possibility of flashing custom ROMs. Kondik has advised those who might be interested in this kind of thing to look for another carrier.
