When not even your own employees want to use your smartphone operating system, how are you supposed to win over consumers? That’s the question Microsoft is facing after one of its Xbox employees was caught tweeting from an Android as opposed to one of the company’s own Windows Phone devices.

Global smartphone shipments grew 41 percent to reach a record 990 million units in 2013, and Android-powered devices accounted for a whopping 79 percent of them. Despite the lowest growth rate in the platform’s history, Android phones still managed to ship four times the amount of iPhone and Windows Phone devices combined.

Nokia Normandy, Nokia’s first Android-powered smartphone, has appeared on a Vietnamese retailer’s website ahead of its official debut. The much-anticipated device is expected to show its face for the first time at MWC next month, and it could launch with support for a number of Google services — including the Google Play Store.

Nokia has today announced that it will hold a press conference at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next month.

Normally we wouldn’t take much notice of that here at Cult of Android — given Nokia doesn’t make any Android-powered devices — but with mounting speculation surrounding Normandy, Nokia’s affordable Android smartphone, that could be about to change.

BlackBerry and Windows Phone might be having a hard time trying to break up the monopoly on mobile software held by Android and iOS, but that hasn’t stopped the Chinese government from having a go with a platform of its own.

Built by a company called Shanghai Liantong in conjunction with ISCAS (Institute of Software at the Chinese Academy of Sciences), COS — which stands for China Operating System — aims to take on Android and iOS by providing better localization for things like language input and cloud services.
