HTC is known to drop software support for their flagship devices within 18 months of their release. Things have changed considerably with the release of the One but it takes more than just a single product to improve your brand’s image in the consumers eye.

In a bid to inspire more confidence on its products, HTC has announced on their Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) that it will be providing software updates to all its future flagship devices for at least 2 years after their launch.

HTC’s decision to turn its focus to affordable smartphones in a bid to save its business is wonderful news for midrange handset buyers, because it means more devices like the Desire 8. Leaked by sources in China, the Desire 8 brings beautiful looks and impressive specifications to the midrange smartphone.

HTC promised last July that it would focus all of its efforts on high-end devices in an effort to turn its struggling smartphone business around, but having tasted little success with that approach, it is now going to make more affordable midrange handsets its priority instead.

Chialin Chang, HTC’s Chief Financial Officer, told Reuters that the Taiwanese firm is looking to sell products in $150-$300 price range.

A leaked screenshot taken from the upcoming HTC One Plus (M8) confirms reports that the device will sport virtual navigation buttons. Its predecessor, the One, and most of the HTC smartphones that came before it, had capacitive touch buttons beneath the display — but the company’s next flagship is set to be the first to buck that trend.

HTC’s Android 4.4 KitKat update for its flagship One has already rolled out in many markets all around the world — including the U.S. — but in typical Verizon fashion, the carrier is keeping its customers waiting. If you’re one of them, you’ll be pleased to know that it will be arriving “shortly.”
