OnePlusOne-HandsOn-09-1200-80

It may be near impossible to obtain a OnePlus One right now, but that hasn’t prevented the folks behind the Team Win Recovery Project from announcing the handset’s first custom recovery. The release will allow the first OnePlus One owners to start flashing custom ROMs and tweaks to their device as soon as the first batch is shipped next month.

Want a taste of CyanogenMod without having to root or flash custom ROMs? Now you can, thanks to CMApps, a free download that puts a bunch of CyanogenMod apps on any Android. The package includes CyanogenMod’s built-in music player, clock widget, sound manager and more — and it’s available now in Google Play.

I don’t know about you, but after all the hype surrounding the OnePlus One in recent months, I was worried it was going to be ugly as sin. After all, it has all the cutting-edge specifications you’d expect from a high-end smartphone, but something had to give to meet that $299 price tag — right?

Maybe, but it certainly wasn’t the design. The One is as beautiful as you would have hoped, with a super-sleek magnesium construction that measures just 4.6mm thin and weighs just 162 grams. It will be available in Sandstone Black and Silk White as standard, which a choice “StyleSwap” back covers including wood, denim, bamboo and Kevlar.

For its price, Amazon’s Kindle Fire range of tablets provide a great bang for buck. Sadly, they ship with a locked down bootloader and Amazon’s own Fire OS that lacks the usual Google Play suite of apps and services. The locked down bootloader means that it can take developers quite a while to get stable custom ROMs up and running on them.

Case in point being Amazon’s 2012 line-up of Fire HD 7-inch and 8.9-inch tablets that have finally received official CyanogenMod 11 nightlies.
