Samsung smartphones have always had plenty of support from custom ROMs like CyanogenMod, allowing owners who hate the TouchWiz user interface to replace it with something a little more like barebones Android. But Galaxy S4 owners on AT&T may not have that luxury.

According to CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik, the AT&T Galaxy S4 comes with a locked bootloader, which could rule out the possibility of flashing custom ROMs. Kondik has advised those who might be interested in this kind of thing to look for another carrier.

The HTC Developer Edition isn’t actually transparent, unfortunately.

HTC has confirmed that the HTC One Developer Edition handset will be available to purchase on April 19 in the United States, priced at $649. Unlike the regular model, this one comes with an unlocked bootloader and SIM, in addition to open APIs. It also offers 64GB of storage as standard.

The company has unveiled the One Developer Edition, which comes with an unlocked SIM and bootloader for $649.

We’ve heard whispers that Google is planning to wow us with a new smartphone built by Motorola, and the latest claims that the device will get its grand unveiling at Google I/O in May. Called the Motorola X, the device is expected to offer stock Android and a modest price tag, but it won’t be a successor to the Nexus 4. It will reportedly launch in July when it will be available on contract with all major carriers, or unlocked through the Google Play store.

The Galaxy Note II “Developer Edition” for Verizon Wireless has appeared on Samsung’s website this morning. Like the Korean company’s other Developer Edition handsets, such as the Galaxy S III, this one comes with a bootloader that will be simple to unlock — unlike the regular Galaxy Note II. Unfortunately, it still has that nasty Verizon logo on its home button.
