BlackBerry will deliver its Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the Priv by the end of this quarter, the company confirmed at CES 2016 in Las Vegas this week. Users will likely have to wait another couple of months for it, but it is on the way!
BlackBerry has confirmed that all of the handsets it releases in 2016 will run Android.
The Canadian company has all but given up on its own BlackBerry 10 operating system following the release of Priv, its first Android-powered smartphone, late last year.
The Android-powered BlackBerry Priv is officially coming to Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint in the United States. While the phone isn’t totally new, the news revolves around an exclusivity deal with AT&T that has come to an end after just a few months. Despite a very rough few years for BlackBerry, perhaps the Priv has what it takes to keep BlackBerry’s ship just slightly above sea level for a little while longer.
BlackBerry CEO John Chen has waded in on the the question of whether or not Apple is right to refuse to help the government access smartphone data for security purposes.
“For years, government officials have pleaded to the technology industry for help,” Chen wrote in a recent blogpost. “Yet [the requests] have been met with disdain.”
Chen’s position is simple: that, “We are indeed in a dark place when companies put their reputations above the greater good.”
