With new Google-powered features and a surprising array of customization options, the long-awaited Moto X is putting an interesting new face on Android. All the details on Motorola’s first flagship phone since the company was purchased by Google were finally revealed during today’s big launch event in New York City.

The Moto X, which goes on sale later this month, runs Jelly Bean out of the box and features a 4.7-inch, hi-res display. The 16GB model will be priced at $199 with a two-year carrier contract, and the 32GB model will cost $299. We knew customization would be a big part of the phone, but Motorola plans to offer a whopping 504 different color combinations.

The above chart explains Android’s extreme fragmentation in a nutshell. Each block represents a device running the Android OS. The total number of distinct devices available for sale in July 2013 is 11,868, while last year the number was 3,997.

OpenSignal has a new report out on the state of Android fragmentation, and the findings are telling. “The [Android] operating system itself is extremely fragmented and has only become more so over time.” Only 37.9% of devices are running Jelly Bean. Eight past versions of the Android OS are still in use.

Despite the fact that Android’s overall growth has exploded within the last year, Samsung owns a whopping 47.5% of the market. Sony-Ericsson comes in a distant second with 6.5%.

It’s worth reading the entire OpenSignal report. The interactive graphs help break down the state of the market. Check it out at the source link below.

After going on sale online at retailers like Best Buy, Amazon, and Walmart, the second-gen Nexus 7 has been made available for purchase in the Google Play Store. The tablet wasn’t supposed to go on sale until July 30th, but retailers and Google have decided to lift the curtain several days early.

A nice thing about ordering through the Play Store is that Google is offering free shipping. The first round of shipments won’t go out until July 30th, but you can pay an extra $13.99 to have your device shipped to you in two business days.

The 16Gb Nexus 7 costs $299, and the 32GB model costs $269.

When Google unveiled the $35 Chromecast dongle yesterday, it revealed that three free months of Netflix (for new and existing customers) would be bundled with each purchase. You don’t have to be a mathematician to realize that such a deal means the Chromecast basically pays for itself, which is awesome.

Unfortunately, the promotion was short lived, as Google has already ended the deal with Netflix. The reason? “Overwhelming demand.”

Google told the LA Times that, “Due to overwhelming demand for Chromecast devices since launch, the 3-month Netflix promotion (which was available in limited quantities) is no longer available.”

After making the device available for sale yesterday, Google’s Chromecast quickly sold out of initial supplies on both the Google Play Store and Amazon in a matter of minutes.
