You can add another name to the list of companies dropping Google Maps in favor of OpenStreetMap. When Wikipedia announced its new app for iOS today, they also announced that they would be using OpenStreetMap exclusively for the nearby view in both their iOS and Android mobile apps. Wikipedia feels this change will be a better fit for their goal of making knowledge available in a free and open manner to everyone.

This also means we no longer have to use proprietary Google APIs in our code, which helps it run on the millions of cheap Android handsets that are purely open source and do not have the proprietary Google applications.

It’s been a long time coming, and many of you have waited patiently while the rest of you well… didn’t. If you own a Sprint Nexus S 4G, you can now officially join the Ice Cream Sandwich club thanks to an update rolling out now. Sprint has announced software update IMM76D (Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich), bringing the much anticipated Ice Cream Sandwich and all of its tasty treats:

Last month Zynga released their popular Scramble With Friends onto Android. Although the initial release was the free ad-supported version, users were really hoping to pony up some cash to get rid of the ads. Zynga listened and after a couple weeks, dropped a new paid version onto the Android Market Google Play Store. Now users can pay $.99 for an ad-free version of Scramble With Friends that also allows users to earn tokens twice as fast.

You’ll be hard pressed trying to find a phone better than the Galaxy Nexus. While the majority of devices are poisoned by manufacturer skins, the Galaxy Nexus remains au natural — the way Google intended. There are many other benefits to owning a Nexus device, and while some carriers (*cough* Sprint *cough*) are still trying to launch the device, deal sites such as Amazon Wireless and Wirefly are practically giving them away. Both sites are currently offering up the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon for the incredible price of $80.

While the rest of us wait to get our hands on a bastardized version of the HTC One, our friends across the pond can pick up the real McCoy today from their favorite carrier. UK carriers O2, Vodafone, Three, Orange, and T-Mobile are all taking orders online as well as selling these One series phones inside their brick-and-mortar compounds. Prices and plans will of course vary depending on carrier, so do your research and see which is best for you.
