The HTC Desire Eye with its giant, front-facing camera sensor is close… so close, in fact, that HTC seems to have made up its official press shots already. Two official images were today leaked on Twitter ahead of the handset’s official unveiling, and they give us our clearest glimpse yet at the selfie-obsessed smartphone.

The Desire Eye first began making news last week when a promotional poster was published by the ever reliable @Upleaks. Today @HTCFamily.ru delivers the Desire Eye’s first press images, and this time the quality is much greater; we get to see the handset’s massive, 13-megapixel selfie camera in all its glory.

The Desire Eye could make its debut at HTC’s “Double Exposure” event on Wednesday, but it’s thought the star of that show will be a new “One M8 Eye” with much-improved cameras on both its front and back. If the Desire Eye doesn’t appear alongside it, we can probably expect a much quieter launch later this month.

After all, the Desire Eye isn’t a flagship like the One M8 is, so it’s unlikely it will get its own event. Having said that, it is expected to have decent specifications. In addition to a 5.2-inch 1080p display, we can expect a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 2,400mAh battery.

The Desire Eye will also have BoomSound speakers, but unlike other HTC handsets, it won’t have a bunch of holes drilled into its front. Instead, the speaker grilles are said to be subtly located above and below the display in a small gap between the glass and the plastic bezels.

While the Desire Eye will be a part of HTC’s midrange Desire family, then, it will easily be the best of the bunch.
