Today’s selection for our weekly Wednesday’s Must Have Game column is Plants vs. Zombies 2, which originally launched for Android back in September 2013, the game has since been named as one of the best action-strategy adventure games on the market and just two days ago it surpassed 20,000,000 downloads.

Plants vs. Zombies 2, the long-awaited sequel to one of the best-selling puzzle games from EA and PopCap, is finally available to download on Android, more than two months after making its debut on iOS. And like most of EA’s new mobile games, it’s a “freemium” title that won’t cost you a penny to download.

PopCap Games free-to-play Plants vs. Zombies 2 is a contentious game to many. If you’re our own good friend Buster Heine, you probably think it’s a masterpiece of a sequel, proof-positive that free-to-play can be done well in the right hands. If you’re me or my girlfriend, though, you likely think it is inferior to the first game in pretty much every way, and a perfect example of how free-to-play mechanisms can ruin an otherwise great game.

Whatever your feelings on the matter, you have to admit that getting Plants vs. Zombies 2 exclusively to iOS is quite the coup. According to EA, it’s a coup that Cupertino (get it?) was willing to pay buckets of money to get. But is that the truth?

Given the success of the original Plants vs. Zombies game, which first landed on iOS almost three years ago, I’m surprised we don’t already have a sequel. But there is one on the way. PopCap has announced that Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be launching early this summer.

Wait, what?

There’s a new Plants vs Zombies stage, available only in China (for now) and only on Android (for now, we hope), called The Great Wall edition. Check out the screenshots for yourselves; we’re solidly on the fence between awe and confusion.
