Samsung Confirms February 23 Event, But It’s Not For The Galaxy S5

Tizen

Samsung has today announced that it will hold a press event in Barcelona on Sunday, February 23 — the day before Mobile World Congress 2014. But this is not the Galaxy S5 event some of you may have been expecting; Samsung plans to unveil its first Tizen-powered devices instead.

“Please join the Tizen Association Board on Sunday, 23 February 2014 for a welcome reception and kick-off to MWC 2014,” Samsung’s invitation reads. “During this invite only event, you will get an exclusive sneak preview of the newest Tizen devices as well as an opportunity to learn about the major milestones that the Tizen project has hit since last year’s event.”

The event will also be attended by Tizen’s major carrier partners, including SK Telecom, Korea Telecom (KT), and LG U+, ZDNet Korea reports.

Recent rumors have claimed that Samsung was planning to unveil the Galaxy S5 on February 23, and that looked all the more likely when it was reported by reliable Russian tipster Eldar Murtazin earlier this week. But it would appear that that’s highly unlikely now.

Then again, it looked highly unlikely all along, really. The Galaxy S5 — Samsung’s flagship smartphone — is big enough to warrant its own event, and it is thought it will get that in London in mid-March. Samsung won’t want to announce it right before a major mobile conference where countless other companies will be making announcements of their own.
