Google’s latest Android Wear update finally enables Wi-Fi connectivity, allowing your smartwatch to communicate with your phone even when it’s out of Bluetooth range. But not all Wear watches have Wi-Fi built-in.

Google is rolling out a massive Android Wear update that hopes to greatly improve the way we use our smartwatches. It finally brings support for Wi-Fi and a new app launcher, and also adds gestures, the ability to draw emojis, and more.

Google’s Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update is expected to arrive in the coming days, and it will be bringing gesture control and Wi-Fi support for Android Wear devices, one source claims.

It seems Google is already gearing up to address one of the advantages Apple Watch has over Android Wear by allowing compatible wearables to receive notifications over Wi-Fi. A future update will also bring gesture controls, sources say.

Android has long allowed us to access certain settings using our voice, but in the latest Google Search update for Lollipop, you’ll actually be able to change them, too. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the flashlight can all be toggled simply by talking to your phone.
