When it comes to using mapping APIs on mobile, it’s hard to think about any name other than Google Maps. However, the truth is that Google Maps doesn’t fit the needs of every developer and/or company. Thankfully we live in a country that allows competition and choice (even though large companies continually try to squash it). There is, in fact, a broad number of mapping solutions available to developers, and with Apple and others recently abandoning Google Maps, we’ve seen a spark of interest in these alternatives. One that’s been working hard to provide a viable option to its customers is deCarta.

Following Apple’s Google’s leap into 3D mapping technologies, Amazon has acquired a 3D mapping startup of its own. The online retail giant today sealed a deal to purchase UpNext in a move that could signal the company’s intentions to bring 3D maps to its Kindle Fire slate without any assistance from Google.

Ahead of the Olympics being held in London this summer, the Google Maps team has released an update for its Android app and mobile web page today that will help commuters in the London area. Today, Google Maps has gained service alerts for London’s Underground train system. Users will be provided with real time information on closures and other issues on the track.

Google has announced an update to its popular Google Maps for Android, bringing the app to version 6.5. The update adds a redesigned navigation home screen, crisper look on devices that have a higher pixel density, a faster experience, and more. The Maps team also announced some pretty interestingĀ statisticsĀ about the app’s all-time usage.


CES attendees will now have another helpful tool to guide them through the endless labyrinths of floors and exhibits found in the Las Vegas casinos and convention center. Google has been teaming up with businesses since November to help provide users with detailed floor plans and indoor location information. Thanks to their recent partnership with MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment and others, Google can now provide indoor maps and info for select resorts and casinos, the Las Vegas Convention Center, as well as the Las Vegas McCarran International Airport.
