You’ve probably heard that the new iPad mini with Retina display has a significantly smaller color gamut that the larger iPad Air, but how does it compete against rival tablets like the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon’s new Kindle Fire HDX?

According to the experts at DisplayMate, not very well. In fact, the new iPad mini came a “distant third” in their tablet display shootout, thanks to Apple’s “inexcusable” decision to use old technology.

“Apple was once the leader in mobile displays, unfortunately it has fallen way behind,” DisplayMate says.

eBay’s Black Friday sale is set to start a day early this year, on Thursday, November 28 — and it includes a whole bunch of tablets, smartphones, consoles, and cameras. So whether you’re into Android or iOS, there’s a great deal to be had, such as an original iPad mini for $239, a Nexus 7 for $199, and the new iPad Air for $469.99.

LG has today announced that its new G Pad 8.3 tablet is now on sale in the U.S., priced at $349.99. The device looks a little like a large LG G2, and it features an 8.3-inch 1920×1200 display with 273 pixels-per-inch, a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor, 16GB of internal storage, and a 5-megapixel camera.

For a long time after its launch, the iPad was by far the best-selling tablet on the market, and no matter how hard they tried, rival devices didn’t stand a chance of stealing its market share. But that’s all changed, according to the latest figures from IDC.

Android-powered slates saw a staggering 163% increase in the last year, and they’ve now overtaken the iPad and opened up a rather large gap in market share.

British retailers have begun accepting pre-orders for the new Nexus 7 today, just a day after it was announced by Google at an event in San Francisco. Currys and PC World were first to make their pre-order pages live, with prices starting at £199.99 ($306) for the 16GB model.

Both retailers are advertising a September 13 release date, which is around six weeks after the tablet is made available in the U.S.
