Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer HTC failed to meet analysts’ estimates during the fourth quarter of 2012, posting an operating income that of just NT$600 million ($21 million). The average estimate from 20 industry analysts was NT$1.11 billion, according to Bloomberg — that’s almost double the figure HTC actually achieved.

Huawei has already confirmed that it has a number of new handsets lined up for CES 2013 next week, two of which will be powered by Android. The Ascend D2 is arguably the most exciting one, and as you can see from its leaked press shot above, it’s a very good-looking device. In fact, its chamfered silver bezel with embedded white antennas make it look a lot like Apple’s white iPhone 5.

Chinese gadget vendor Huawei has confirmed that it will announce a new flagship smartphone called the Ascend D2 at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The Android-powered handset, which is rumored to feature a 5-inch 1080p display, will make its debut alongside the W1, a second smartphone that will run Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform.

HTC looks to be preparing a new flagship Android smartphone for 2013, and leaked specifications for the device suggest it’s well worth getting excited about. It’s codenamed the HTC M7, and it boasts a plethora of cutting-edge components — some of which haven’t been introduced to a smartphone before, such as its 4.7-inch 1080p display, which boasts a pixel density 40% greater than that of the iPhone 5.

HTC often brings its latest smartphones to Europe before they go global, but that hasn’t been the case with the company’s first 1080p offering. The HTC J Butterfly made its debut in Japan first, then came to the United States as the Droid DNA weeks later. Europeans got excited when the Taiwanese company announced the international version — the Butterfly — last week, but it seems their dreams have already been shattered.

The HTC Butterfly isn’t coming to Europe, after all.
