I’ve heard a lot of bad things said about the Galaxy S5’s fingerprint sensor, or “Finger Scanner,” as Samsung likes to call it. But having used the phone a lot over the past month, I’m not sure all of that criticism is deserved.

It may not be as accurate or as reliable as Apple’s Touch ID, so if you’re switching from an iPhone 5s, you probably shouldn’t expect it to be quite as good. But my Galaxy S5’s Finger Scanner has been great — and throughout a typical day, I’ll only have to swipe twice maybe two or three times.

Having said that, I did set mine up a little differently to many of the Galaxy S5 users I’ve spoken to. Here are some simple tips that will help you improve the accuracy of your Finger Scanner.

The Nexus 7 just became an even greater buy in the U.K., where Google and Asus have teamed up to offer customers who pick up the 16GB model a £50 Google Play gift card at no extra cost. Waterproof smartphones are all the fad these days with Samsung and Sony’s first half flagship for 2014 sporting an IP67 and IP58 rating, respectively. The only exception is the new One (M8) from HTC, which does not feature any kind of IP rating or at least that’s what the company has led us to believe until now.

Turns out, the HTC One (M8) has an IPX3 rating, as confirmed by Jeff Gordon, senior global communications manager at HTC.

Samsung recently upset a lot of international Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) owners when it told them they weren’t getting an Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade because their handset “does not allow them to effectively support the platform upgrade.” The South Korean claimed that only 1GB of RAM wasn’t enough to run KitKat’s latest features smoothly. But that may not be true.

When Samsung confirmed it was giving up on KitKat for a large number of Galaxy S3s, the development community decided it was time to take matters into their own hands. Using a Galaxy Note II KitKat ROM, one develoepr has been able to create an almost perfect Galaxy S3 port.

If you’re a flagship smartphone buyer who hasn’t already adopted the Galaxy S5, the HTC One M8, or the Sony Xperia Z2, chances are you’re probably patiently awaiting the LG G3 instead. That’s the case for a lot of people, thanks to the success of last year’s G2.
