Google has been accused of breaking its student privacy pledge by collecting data and browsing habits from Chromebooks used in schools and Google Apps for Education.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has called upon the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate Google’s conduct, and to prevent it from using the data it has collected so far.

On Sunday, South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission on Sunday ordered both Google and Apple to make changes to their Android and iOS app store policies, to make after-purchase refunding more friendly to consumers.

Under the new terms, Google will need to establish a refund system based on developers’ individual policies, while Apple must send out notifications to App Store users every time the company updates its contract terms and conditions.

A seemingly harmless flashlight application built for Android has tricked tens of millions of users into handing over personal data, the Federal Trade Commission has revealed. Developed by GoldenShores Technologies, the Brightest Flashlight app took device ID and location data without informing users, then passed it on to advertisers.

Samsung has been fined $340,000 by Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission for an Internet campaign against HTC that violated fair trade rules. The South Korean company paid students to praise its own smartphones in online reviews while slamming those of rival HTC.

Google has filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission to drop a patent complaint against Microsoft that sought to prevent the company from using video compression technology on its popular Xbox 360 console. The move follows an antitrust settlement Google made with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission earlier this month, which said the company must license patents used in standards to other parties.
