The new Moto X may not be the greatest smartphone you’ll see this year when it comes to specifications, but its unique customization options mean that it has received a lot of attention since it was announced earlier this month. But all that attention could have gone to HTC.

The Taiwanese smartphone maker was reportedly planning a customizable handset of its own not so long ago, but the plans were canned due to concerns over the cost and complexity.

MotoX

Motorola has said that the Moto X will start shipping later this month and in early September, but we haven’t heard any concrete dates until now. Word on the street is that AT&T and Sprint will start carrying the Moto X first on Friday, August 23rd, followed by Verizon on Thursday, August 29th.

Droid Life has heard about these dates from sources, and Android Central has provided leaked inventory from Best Buy that supports the proposed Verizon date.

AT&T selling first makes sense given that Motorola has an exclusive launch partnership with the carrier for its Motor Maker website. Moto X buyers on AT&T will be able to customize their device through the website with different color and engraving options before anyone else.

No word on when, or if, T-Mobile will carry the Moto X.
