There are a number of reasons why the Fire Phone was destined to be a flop, but perhaps the biggest was its price tag. At $199 on a two-year contract when it first made its debut, the device was as expensive as the Galaxy S5, even though its specifications weren’t as good.

Now Amazon’s senior vice president of devices has conceded that the retail giant made a mistake with Fire Phone pricing.

Amazon is quickly learning that 3D gimmicks and a lack of third-party app support aren’t attributes consumers tend to look for in a smartphone, with one report suggesting that the retail giant has sold fewer than 35,000 Fire Phones since the device made its debut back in July.

The Amazon Appstore might not have as many apps as Google Play, but it certainly offers up better deals. Take the latest giveaway, for example — it consists of 30 apps and games worth over $100, including big-name titles like Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, Docs To Go Premium, and Instapaper.

Amazon has released its first commercial for the Fire Phone, and it’s focused on the free 12-month Prime subscription that comes bundled with it. There’s also a brief mention of some of the apps that will be available for the device at launch, including Skype, Twitter, and Minecraft.
