Samsung has today announced the Galaxy Mega Plus 5.8, a new addition to its super-sized smartphone lineup that gets a quad-core upgrade under the hood. In almost every other way, however, the handset is identical to its dual-core predecessor, the Galaxy Mega.

Chinese manufacturer MediaTek is known for its affordable quad-core chipsets that are used in several low cost smartphones around the world. But the company is now looking to make a big entry into the top-end market with the launch of its new MT6595 octa-core chipset.

And a new report from a Korean analyst claims that Samsung might bring this technology to its mainstream devices like the Note series as soon as this year.

We’ve been expecting a price tag and launch date for the Geeksphone Revolution for a while now, and today we finally got them. The world’s first dual-booting handset, which runs both Android and Firefox OS, will go on sale next Thursday, February 20, priced at €289 ($395).
