Samsung’s round Gear smartwatch to launch alongside Galaxy Note 5

The Galaxy Note 5 may not be the only Samsung device to look forward to this fall. Sources say the South Korean company will launch its all-new Gear smartwatch, its first wearable with a round display, alongside the next-generation phablet at IFA in September.

“Our sources tell us that the Gear A – codenamed Orbis – will be launched alongside the Galaxy Note 5 at IFA later this year, and that there is a lot discussion going on at Samsung in order to decide the time frame,” SamMobile reports.

It’s thought the delay is partly to align the Gear’s launch with that of the Galaxy Note 5. Samsung has traditionally launched its smartwatches alongside new phones — usually the latest Galaxy S — and it makes sense to announce them at one event.

However, it’s thought another reason for the delay is that Samsung wants to give the ongoing Apple Watch hype a little time to settle down.

SamMobile is keen to point out that “this information should be treated as a rumor and isn’t confirmed.” While the site’s sources are usually very accurate, IFA is still a long time away, so any plan Samsung has now could well change by then.

If the new Gear does debut at IFA, however, then it’s going to be a super exciting fall for Samsung fans — and likely a pretty expensive one, too. I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be more excited for the watch or the Galaxy Note 5.

IFA kicks off on September 4 this year, and as always, it’ll be held in Berlin.
