Google Maps gets a super sweet redesign for Lollipop
Google Maps for Android is the latest Google app to get a Material Design makeover for Android 5.0 Lollipop, following the improvements to Calendar on Monday. It’s not just more colorful than it was before, however; you’ll also find new services built–in, including Uber and Open Table.
“This new look is all about creating surfaces and shadows that echo the real world,” Google explained in a post on its blog today. “With Google Maps’ new material feel, layers and buttons come to life so you know just where to touch to get directions, recommendations and imagery.”
Maps info sheets for places now make viewing photos, reviews, and contact information for the locations you wish to visit even easier, and with Open Table built right in, you can plan a lunch break into your trip and book a table without even having to leave the Maps app (so long as you live in the U.S.).
Uber’s also built-in now, so if you decide your destination is too far away, or it’s starts raining and you’d rather not walk, you can tap the Uber button to grab a ride. Just remember that you’ll also need the Uber app installed, otherwise the button won’t appear.
Google is rolling out its new Maps update “over the next few days,” it says, so if you haven’t already received it, keep an eye on your Play Store updates. iOS users can expect to see the same changes in the coming weeks.
