Thanks to its Gorilla Glass 3 display, the new HTC One M8 is surprisingly strong. As you’ll see in the video torture test below, it won’t just withstand light scratches from keys and sharp knives — but also some impressive force from a hammer.

The handset’s aluminum unibody, on the other hand, isn’t quite so tough.

Before you scroll down to the video, know that it’s incredibly painful to watch. If you don’t like to see shiny new handsets get ruined for no reason, you’re probably not going to like it. And likewise, if you’re desperate to get your hands on the new HTC One M8, you won’t enjoy watching someone destroy one.

But if you’re interested in finding out how well the handset copes with scratches, scuffs, and smacks, then you’ll want to check it out.

The M8’s display copes incredibly well with keys — and even the sharp knife — as you’d probably expect from the latest Gorilla Glass. It even withstands some pretty decent force from the hammer; as noted by the video’s creator, who proclaims “this thing is literally indestructible” after giving it a good whack.

It’s no wonder, then, that HTC is giving M8 customers a free one-time screen repair within the first six months — it’s almost impossible to break unintentionally. Of course, if you put enough effort into it, it will smash eventually, as we see in the video.

The M8’s aluminum casing isn’t quite as impressive, though. It picks up scratches pretty easily, and so you’re probably going to want to keep this handset in a case if you want it to remain in pristine condition.
