Samsung Seeks Better Smartphones As Camera & Mobile Businesses Merge
Samsung has merged its digital imaging and mobile communications businesses in a bid to create better smartphones. The South Korean company hopes that the reshuffle will lead to better collaboration between the two teams as consumers become increasingly concerned about camera performance when buying a new handset.
“We will transplant the brand, sales networks, software competency and manufacturing competitiveness of the Wireless Business Division into the Camera Business Division, and integrate the technical know-how of the two business divisions into competency for differentiating our smartphones,” a Samsung spokesperson told Korea’s ET News.
It’s not entirely clear what Samsung is aiming for, but one would imagine its focus will be on better smartphone cameras rather than better cameras with smartphones built-in — such as the Galaxy S4 Zoom.
The 13-megapixel shooter featured in Samsung’s latest flagships certainly isn’t bad, but with impressive competition from the likes of Apple, LG, and Nokia — which is really redefining smartphone photography with its incredible PureView cameras — there’s always room for improvement.
