Samsung Document Hints At KitKat Updates For Midrange Devices

Android-KitKat-4-4

When you buy a midrange smartphone, your chances of getting a next-generation Android update are pretty slim. It may not be that your device isn’t capable of running the update, but manufacturers tend to focus on their high-end devices instead when rolling out new software, leaving the cheaper models out in the cold.

But if you own a midrange Samsung device, you could be in luck when it comes to Android 4.4 KitKat. A leaked Samsung document suggests the South Korean company is investigating the possibility of bringing Google’s latest Android release to devices like the Galaxy S4 mini, the Galaxy S III mini, and even the Galaxy Ace 3.

The document was obtained by SamMobile, who received it from an anonymous tipster. With that in mind, take it with a pinch of salt until you hear something official from Samsung. But it suggests the company has already begun testing KitKat updates for a long list of midrange devices, including the following:

  • Galaxy S4 mini
  • Galaxy S III mini
  • Galaxy Ace 3
  • Galaxy Ace 2
  • Galaxy S Advance
  • Galaxy Core
  • Galaxy FAME
  • Galaxy Fresh

There may be others, too, but only part of the document is pictured.

Just because Samsung is testing KitKat for these devices, it doesn’t mean they will get it, of course. The update may not run flawlessly on all of them, and therefore users may be better off with an older version of Jelly Bean. Nevertheless, it’s promising to see that Samsung isn’t just ignoring them.

If your device is on this list, all you can do for now is keep your fingers crossed. If we hear more, we’ll be sure to update you.
