Wikipad: The Most Unique Mobile Gaming Device On The Market To Date [Review]

Performance

Enjoying a good game of SG:Deadzone

Neatly packed inside the tablet is a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor optimized for cloud gaming with a 12-core NVIDIA GPU, 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 16GB of internal storage (expandable to 64GB with a 32GB microSD card), a 3-axis accelerometer, a gyroscope, GPS and an e-compass.

The Tegra 3 processor combined with the 12-core GPU means that the Wikipad is a powerhouse for mobile gaming. It blitzes through any task you throw at it, and can handle any game on Google Play at its highest settings – that’s pretty impressive if you ask me.

The fifth core is cleverly dedicated to executing less intense tasks, like adding an event to your calendar, or sending an e-mail. This has a very positive effect on the battery life, so you have more juice to play games, later on in the day.

The Wikipad really is the perfect device if you want to kick back and play a thrilling Android shooter game, such as Dead Trigger.

Connectivity

Wikipad MicroSD

The Wikipad also has a microSD slot, which can be used as an additional storage medium.

The tablet features a micro-HDMI output slot, which enables you to easily connect the Wikipad to any HD TV so you can play games, watch programes or movies directly on the big screen.

But, unfortunately, when connected to a high-definition television, the Wikipad only transmits graphics in 720p HD, which sadly doesn’t live up to the quality of most modern-day games.

Bluetooth has proved to be fairly responsive, and thanks to the integration of Bluetooth 4.0, it doesn’t completely drain the battery life.

Finally, there was no ‘lag’ when streaming music from Spotify to a Bluetooth speaker, which is an area of difficulty for some Android-powered tablets.

Battery

Together the tablet and controller house a whopping 4,100 mAh battery, which the team at Wikipad claim will last for 8 hours of constant use.

Regrettably, I don’t have 8 hours free in my day to sit around and constantly play games, so I couldn’t test the quoted usage time. But I did manage to play SG: DeadZone on the train for a total of three and a half hours, and by the time I arrived home, I had just over 75% of battery remaining, so Wikipad’s alleged total use time does seem fairly plausible.

During the testing process, I unhooked the tablet from its charger at 6 a.m, and used it to steam music, reply to emails, watch YouTube videos and browse the web, up until around 12:00 a.m., after which, it usually had just over 25% of battery remaining.
