LG has confirmed that it will use Qualcomm’s latest high-end Snapdragon 800 processor in its next Optimus smartphone. The Snapdragon 800 is an upgrade over the Snapdragon 600, which is currently shipping inside the latest flagship smartphones, including the HTC One and the Samsung Galaxy S4.

The quad-core chip is capable of clock speeds up to 2.3GHz per core, and delivers support for 4K video, as well as features like LTE.

Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon 800 brings a whopping 75% performance boost over the previous generation Snapdragon S4 Pro, which is built into smartphones like the original LG Optimus G, the Sony Xperia Z, the LG Nexus 4, and the HTC Droid DNA.

As a result, LG believes the chip help them build the best smartphone the industry has ever seen.

“With a powerful combination of LG’s core smartphone technologies and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, we are taking a significant step forward in the mobile experience,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “The result of this collaboration will in many ways be the industry’s best smartphone by which all other devices will be measured.”

LG hasn’t confirmed what the new Optimus handset will be called yet, or when it will be announced. But we’re certainly looking forward to it.
