HTC told us back in March that Verizon wouldn’t be getting the HTC One, and that it would be offering a Butterfly successor instead. But it appears the Taiwanese company may have changed its mind.

According to a new rumor, Verizon will announce its own HTC One at CTIA later today, and it will be running the latest Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean operating system.

It’s advisable to take this rumor with a pinch of salt. It doesn’t come from a traditionally reliable source, but rather an XDA Developers forum member who works with in a Sprint store and claims to have seen the Verizon HTC One in the flesh.

They report that an HTC representative visited their store and had the Verizon HTC One in their pocket; it was revealed when the source asked when the Android 4.2.2 update for the One (which currently runs Android 4.1.2) would be arriving.

According to the source, the device will get its grand unveiling at CTIA later today. And Verizon just happens to have a “Special Announcement” scheduled.

Although HTC said the One was not coming to Verizon, a Verizon variant has been spotted in benchmarks and software code for several months now. Whether or not this device will actually see the light of day remains to be seen, but it would appear there is certainly something in this rumor.
