Samsung Announces Waterproof Galaxy S4 Active

Another day, another new Samsung smartphone. This time it’s the much-anticipated Galaxy S4 Active, a ruggedized, waterproof version of the flagship Galaxy S4 that promises to be “the perfect companion for exploration, activity and adventure.”

“The GALAXY S4 Active is the newest addition to the GALAXY series and is purposefully designed for active users who love the outdoors,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics.

“Samsung has taken the innovative features of the GALAXY S4 and added breakthrough protective design elements to create a device that thrives in an active environment and is built for a lifestyle of travel and exploration.”

The Galaxy S4 Active is a lot like its brother on the inside, featuring a 1.9GHz quad-core processor, a 5-inch 1080p display with 443 pixels-per-inch, and a 2,600mAh battery. Its rear-facing camera has been downgraded a little to an 8-megapixel shooter, however.

On the outside, the Galaxy S4 Active is a lot different. There are three physical buttons rather than just one, and the device is more robust all round. It’s also dust resistant, and waterproof in water up to three feet deep for up to 30 minutes.

It comes with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean pre-installed, with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface over the top. That means it’s also kitted out with a suite of Samsung apps and features, including S Travel, S Translator, Glove Touch, S Health, and the Galaxy camera with Sound & Shot, Drama Shot, and more.

Samsung hasn’t yet mentioned pricing or availability for the Galaxy S4 Active.
