Nintendo’s first mobile game will debut on March 17
Nintendo’s first ever smartphone game will finally land on iOS and Android this month — and we now know when and where it will be making its world debut.
Called Miitomo — and described by its creators as a “smart-device app that sparks one-of-a-kind conversations between you and your friends” — the game will first be available to download in Japan on March 17.
There’s no news yet on when it is likely to arrive elsewhere, but a soft-launch on Nintendo’s home turf of Japan will certainly be a good stress test of Nintendo’s servers. It is likely that a true worldwide launch for Android and iOS won’t be too long after, either, since Nintendo is already carrying out worldwide preregistration.
That means that if you’re a Nintendo fan wanting to get hold of your preferred username — as well as additional launch details — it’s worth signing up ASAP.
Miitomo may not be the franchise Nintendo game many are dreaming of (a second free-to-play title with some of the company’s more recognizable characters will arrive later in 2016), but it certainly sounds intriguing as an offbeat way to dip a toe in smartphone gaming.
At least five more official Nintendo games for iOS and Android are reportedly on the way by the end of 2017. Hopefully it won’t be long until we’re all tapping away at new, better-than-ever installments of the Metroid, Zelda, and Mario franchises. Right, Nintendo?
