If you’re still clinging onto your HTC One M8 Google Play Edition, then you’re in for a big, sweet treat this month, because HTC has confirmed its Android 6.0 Marshmallow upgrade is on the way.

Confirmation came from HTC Product Manager Mo Versi on Twitter. Versi did not confirm exactly when the software would be available, but promised it would arrive before the end of October. More specific information should be available closer to release.

This upgrade will make the One M8 one of the first third-party devices to run Marshmallow, following its rollout to Google’s own Nexus family. New features include native support for fingerprint scanners and USB-C, big improvements to performance and efficiency, and more.

If you have a regular One M8, you can find tutorials over on the XDA Developers forum that’ll help you convert it to a Google Play Edition device, which will allow you to flash the Marshmallow release when it becomes available.

Bear in mind, however, that this is a risky procedure, and you will of course lose the HTC features you’ve become accustomed to with Sense.
