You probably only ever notice your smartphone’s LED notification light when you have new alerts, but it can do so much more. If your handset is rooted, a new app called LED Music Effect can turn it into an awesomely colorful visualizer for your favorite tunes.

The free app, available from Google Play, causes your smartphone’s LED to light up in flow with the track you’re listening to. And if your smartphone supports it, the LED will change color, too — and it all works in the background while you use your phone for other tasks.

The app supports a whole host of devices, including the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and Nexus 6; multiple Sony Xperia devices, Samsung’s Galaxies, and devices from LG. It may also work on others — these are just the handsets that have been tested.

LED Music Effect also works well with a multitude of music apps, including Spotify, Play Music, Sony’s Walkman app, Power Amp, Rhapsody, and many more. Here’s a preview of the app in action.

Just remember that your handset must be rooted for this app to work. Those that don’t appear to be working with the app at this point include the OnePlus One, and the Sony Xperia M.
