Huawei’s forthcoming sequel to its popular flagship phablet, the Ascend Mate, is expected to be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) next week, on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, in Las Vegas. However, just days before its scheduled announcement, the Ascend Mate 2 has been surreptitiously snapped, and the shots leaked — these images reveal much of the handset’s appearance and specifications.

A snap of the “About Device” screen on the Mate 2 suggests that the smartphone will pack some pretty impressive internal components, including a 6.1-inch IPS display with a resolution of 720 x 1280, a 1.6GHz Huawei Kirin 910 processor, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with OIS, a 5-megapixel rear-facing shooter and a whopping 4,050 mAh non-removable battery.

In addition, several screenshots taken on the home screen of the Ascend Mate 2 indicate that the handset is running a newer version of Huawei’s custom user interface, which is good news, considering how slow and outdated the previous version was.

These images, courtesy of Engadget, also show that the sequel is significantly thinner, shorter and more curved than its predecessor, which launched back in March, 2013. You can check out all 9 shots in the gallery below:
