Sony is in the process of rolling out a couple of new over-the-air (OTA) updates for its flagship Xperia Z1 and Xperia Z Ultra handsets. Although neither bring the latest version of Android, 4.3 Jelly Bean, they are still quite significant maintenance updates that we would advise all users to download and install.

The Xperia Z1 was released last month, and features a 5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920, a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, an Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage (expandable up to 64GB via microSD), a whopping 20.7-megapixel rear-facing camera and non-removable Li-Ion 3,000 mAh battery.

Whereas, the Xperia Z Ultra was launched back in July, and packs a gigantic 6.4-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1080 x 1920, a 2.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, an Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 16Gb of internal storage (expandable up to 64GB via microSD), a 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and a non-removable Li-Ion 3,050 mAh battery.

The upgrade brings several camera tweaks for the Xperia Z1, including new camera algorithms for “better all round performance.” There have also been some changes to the Sony smart camera platform, which now enables built-in apps to run more fluidly.

Whereas, the Xperia Z Ultra update brings “optimized touchscreen sensitivity ” for fingers and styluses, therefore, effectively broadening the range of input methods, empowering the device to compete with the likes of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy Note III.

In addition, both the Z1 and Z Ultra will receive battery life enhancements, display calibration tweaks and significantly faster e-mail synchronisation over Microsoft Exchange.

If you own an Xperia Z1 or Z Ultra and have not yet received the OTA update, you can head into “Settings,” then “About Device,” and select “Check for Updates” to manually scan for the upgrade.
