At an Android event in San Francisco this morning, Google’s Sundar Pichai announced that the company has now seen more than 70 million Android activations — with around 50 million of those happening in 2013 alone. Google also announced that more than 50 billion apps have now been downloaded from Google Play.

At Google I/O back in May, Google announced 48 billion Google Play downloads, which means over 2 billion titles have been downloaded in just a few weeks.

Google Play now offers more than 1 million apps and games, and it has seen a 2.5 times increase in revenue per user. In comparison, Apple CEO Tim Cook announces last month that the App Store currently has 900,000 apps on offer, so it would appear Google Play has finally overtaken it.
