New Android App Turns Your Old Wii Balance Board Into Wireless Scales

FitScales

If you haven’t already sold your Wii Balance Board on eBay, then it’s time to grab it out of the garage, dust it off, and give it a new lease of life. With a new Android app called FitScales, your Balance Board becomes a pair of wireless scales, allowing you to keep a digital record of your weight on your smartphone.

Not only can you measure your weight digitally, but you can then upload those results to either FitBit or RunKeeper. Best of all, the FitScales app is completely free.

To get started, simply download the app from Google Play using the source link below, then open it up. Enter the details it asks for — such as your height — and set up any services that you’d like to connect to. Then hit the red sync button on your Wii Balance Board and wait for it to connect.

You’ll need to ensure that you’re not stood on the Balance Board initially so that it can calibrate.

Paul O’Brien over at MoDaCo, who discovered FitScales, tested out its accuracy by weighing himself on the Wii Balance Board and then on a proper set of scales. As you can see from the image below, he got exactly the same result on both.

There is one caveat to this app, however: it’s not currently compatible with the latest Android 4.2 release, but it is compatible with Android 4.1. Given that only a few handsets are running the the former, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue for most.
