Instagram has generated quite a bit of negative press in recent weeks since the Facebook-owned photography app updated its terms and conditions with some hairy verbiage regarding content ownership. Things have died down more recently since Instagram clarified its policies regarding how users’ photos can be used in advertisements.

Many assumed that legions of disgruntled Instagram users had jumped ship over the past month, but the social network has released its usage statistics for the first time to squash any concerns.

Instagram is healthy and growing. Between iOS and Android, the network boasts 90 million monthly active users, 40 million pics per day, 8,500 likes per second, and 1,000 comments per second. These figures are staggering when you consider that Instagram has only been around since its original launch on the iPhone back in October 2010. As AllThingsD notes, Instagram’s active user base has grown by 10% since the beginning of December 2012.

40 million is merely a fraction of the hundreds of millions of pics people upload to Facebook, Instagram’s parent company, every day. But Instagram is still the largest mobile-only social network of any kind. The enhanced web profiles that have been rolling out suggest that Instagram wants users to be able to interact with the network from any device, but photo uploading will remain restricted to the mobile apps.
