Asus ME172V Tablet Images Leak Following Mystery Benchmarks

Early this month, we told you about some mysterious benchmarks that indicated Asus was working on a new budget tablet, codenamed the ME172V. However, we couldn’t confirm whether they were genuine. Now they’ve been backed up by some images of the devices published by a Russian retailer.

We can’t confirm these are genuine, either, of course, but they certainly make those benchmarks look a little more promising. What’s more, the specifications listed are an exact match. Priced at 6,990 rubles (approx. $225), the slate offers 16GB of internal storage, a 7-inch 1024×600 display, 1GB of RAM, and a 1GHz processor with a Mali 400 GPU.

It’s possible that these photos could be fan-made mockups, but I can’t help but wonder who would want to fake a budget Asus tablet. Surely something a little more high-end would be more exciting. That makes me think the Asus ME172V is real, and that it’s on its way soon. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it at CES next month.

A budget tablet that’s slower, lower res, and more expensive than the Nexus 7 that was also made by Asus? Sounds likely to me.
