5 Million Draw Something Users Opt For The Eraser, Stop Playing After Just A Month

The uber-popular social drawing app Draw Something, appears to be drawing less attention ever since Zynga bought out the game’s creators OMGPOP for $200 million. According to Atlantic Wire magazine, the month after Zynga’s purchase, the app saw a 5 million user drop in daily usage. That’s a pretty significant drop, whether directly related remains unknown, but it’s either that, or people have simply lost interest in the game.

This data comes via App Data, whose numbers are based upon the Facebook login method of playing the game. While this isn’t the only way to play the game, it is one of the most popular ways and it’s still alarming to see such a drop in just 30 days. Draw Something saw its peak of average users the day Zynga took over — 15 million users — and it’s been downhill ever since.

Coincidentally, Zynga’s stock has dropped by 50% in about the same amount of time. So what has people so upset? Is it Zynga, or Zynga’s purchase of OMGPOP? At this point, I don’t think it really matters, as OMGPOP (who was on the verge of bankruptcy) is drawing dollar signs all the way to the bank, while Zynga is left to deal with the virtual shavings.

Have you given Draw Something a shot? Did you like it? Are you still playing it? Has Zynga’s purchase of OMGPOP affected your feelings towards the game? Give a shout and let us know what you think is the reason this once “next Angry Birds” is now on the verge of being erased from our minds.

Basically people got bored with it. It became a chore and because of no notifications people forgot about it. There was no incentive to continue playing after earning all of the colors.

It’s because you get the same words over and over when playing the same person so it gets boring drawing and guessing the same things again and again.

Yep, thats why I’ve ditched it, as have others I regularly played with.

I tried it and found it buggy as hell. Plus words kept repeating and when a friend and I got to 99 turns the counter stopped and wouldn’t go higher. So we just stopped playing

  • jbnunn

Several flaws: VERY limited dictionary, took too long for an undo feature, counter stopped at 99, no way to skip to the end of a drawing, and drawing precision is lame with the finger tip.

  • popeyoni

Zynga are a bunch of douchebags, but I don’t think the average player knows that (or cares).
    Maybe people just got bored.

  • MacHead84

I played it a lot when it first came out but its lost a lot of its fun. Nothing to do with Zynga but I hardly play anymore, once every 14 days is probably my current average. The games just grown repetative (same words over n over) and the collection of stars to buy new words/colors/bombs is so tedious that its no longer fun

  • imronburgundy

I think the game was hilarious at first, now its almost a burden to sit and draw a picture.

I agree with many of you. Fun at first, but the repetition of words (and too many tween pop stars!) made it boring after a while. I was using a stylus, so I could do some pretty nice drawings, but often my art was being wasted on people who would just write the word when it was their turn. Huh? What’s the point??

  • Ben Graham

It’s not that zynga have bought it, it’s just people have got bored of it. All you do is draw and guess. It needs to add totally new gmae mechanics for it to carry on with great success.

    people just got bored!

  • Michael Johnson

I played it a lot but just got bored. It’s not fun anymore.

at first i played with the free version and kinda like it, so after playing with the free version for a day or two, I decided to purchase the paid version, but right now I have played it once in a very long while due to , repetitive words, sometimes I have to redraw because my previous masterpiece just go nowhere, that bug really sucks. I think sometimes you have to keep it open for a while after submitting a drawing, or else your deawing might be lost. and also the nuissance of other player who write down the word instead of draw, I would accept stick drawing but would not tolerate writing down words which defeat the purpose of playing the game.

I still really enjoy playing the game although I do agree with many of the criticisms. I’ve also noticed a lot fewer people are playing regularly. I bought the paid version before Zynga bought OMGPOP and while I like the eraser, the new requirements for Facebook are very annoying.

I’ve played for a few weeks. A total of maybe 70 turns, and have received the same words countless times. I don’t play it nearly as much as I did in the beginning.

Its all about the same words over and over again.  I thought that would stop after buying the not free version, but still I am drawing the same words every 10 games.  Gets old.

  • frustrated999

I just got tired of it as the words kept repeating. Also some people just got fed with OMGPop rolling out update that never fixed their problems with disappearing coins and or colors.

I enjoy the drawing part (as I can be as creative as I want with my stylus) but waiting for the other person to draw back AND having to sit through their drawing to watch the ENTIRE process can take so long that I’ll just put it down and wait for the animation to finish.

I tried, but since I have to restart my phone after each turn it falls into the “Not worth my time” category.
