Yesterday, Thomas Devaux, the developer behind Google URL Shortener, announced that he is rebranding the application by simply changing its name to ‘URL Shortener’. We assume that this is a tactical move to prevent any legal action being taken against Google due to the extremely rapid speed at which the service is growing.

If you’re not familiar with the app, once installed the application connects directly to your Google Account, after copying a link a little button will appear on your screen asking you if you want to shorten it. If shortened users will have the ability to share the link to various social networking websites from within the URL Shortener application itself.

Obviously, users will receive a push notification on their smartphone or tablet prompting them to update to the latest version of ‘Google URL Shortener’, however, once installed the name will be changed to ‘URL Shortener’. Furthermore, operators will now also be able to receive vibration alerts when a notification has been received, thanks to the adaption of the APK to suit Android 4.2 specifications.
