Flagship Status Of The Sony Xperia Z2 Could Be Short Lived

Xperia Z2

The Sony Xperia Z2 is not even a week old and we’re already hearing of a successor. According to a Sony Mobile official, the company is planning to launch a new flagship every six months, which means that the Xperia Z2 will no longer be the best Sony smartphone in the market by September-October this year.

Yoshiro Kurozumi, who is Sony Mobile’s Creative Director, Director of Product Planning and UX General Manager, gave out this information in an interview with a Japanese publication. He justified this by saying that the company needs to speed up its refresh cycle to remain competitive in the industry. Perhaps launching two segments of flagships (like Samsung does) would be a great idea, but replacing every flagship once in six months doesn’t seem ideal.

This will also increase Sony’s troubles with timely Android updates as smartphones like the Xperia Z, Xperia Z1, Z1 Compact and the Z Ultra are still awaiting an update to Android 4.4 KitKat. Mr. Kurozumi further said that the company isn’t stuck with the same design and might look to change with the Xperia Z3 in the coming months. So that is probably the only positive from this report.
