Google has added a new ultra-affordable Android-powered smartphone to its rapidly-growing range of Google Play Edition devices. The Moto G GPE is listed as $179 for the 8GB unlocked model and will work on both AT&T and T-Mobile’s networks in the U.S.

The Moto G is by far the most affordable smartphone in the Play Store, packing a 4.5-inch capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 720 x 1280, a 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, an Adreno 305 GPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB/16GB of internal storage, a 5-megapixel rear-facing camera, a 1.3-megapixel front-facing shooter and a 2,070 mAh Li-Ion removable battery.

With regards to software, the Google Play Edition will ship running Vanilla Android 4.4.2 Jelly Bean and will come with an easily unlockable bootloader. Although the standard Moto G also ships running stock Android, one of the main advantages of buying a Play Edition is the possibility of faster updates to newer versions of Android which are directly coded and approved by Google itself.
