Samsung has applied for a trademark on the name “Galaxy GEAR” for its much-anticipated smartwatch. This is the eighth trademark that the electronics giant has filed in the last 7 days at the United States Patents and Trademarks Office, so it’s pretty clear that the South Korean company is planning something big.

The application specifies that the trademark will be used in relation to:

Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages; wearable electronic handheld devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle for the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers.

It has always been believed that the smartwatch may run Android, but by Samsung using the Galaxy branding in the marked name “Galaxy GEAR” we now have a stronger suspicion that this might be the case as every other Galaxy handset and tablet on the market currently runs Google’s operating system.

It’s possible that this name will never see the light of day, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t keep our eyes peeled.
