Archos unveiled the GamePad 2 last month, its successor to the OEMs fairly-popular GamePad tablet, which made its debut in 2012. And now, the French consumer electronics company is introducing a new slate, which is an addition to its “Gen 11” range of 10-inch devices.

Unlike the GamePad series, the 101 XS 2 is not predominantly designed for gaming. In fact, it has been created with a tablet owner in mind who wants the option to play games on a relatively high-spec device, but also has the facility to sit back and get some work done whilst they’re out and about, without the necessity of having to carry around a full-sized laptop.

The XS 2 is the only tablet on the market to ship with a specially designed magnetic keyboard, in which the device can be docked and then used to complete various office-based tasks, including word processing and spreadsheet creation. When it’s not in use the “Coverboard” simply clips onto the back of the 10.1-inch slate via built-in magnets.

In terms of specifications, the 101 XS 2 packs a 10.1-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. In addition, the tablet will ship running Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, and is believed to be upgradable to Android 4.3 shortly after release.

As you’d expect with any Android tablet, the 101 XS2 comes pre-loaded with the usual suite of Google apps, including Gmail, YouTube and the Google Play Store. Archos has also preinstalled OfficeSuite Pro 6 together with its own suite of media-orientated apps for movie and TV show playback.

The slate is expected to arrive in the U.K. this December, with the fairly reasonable price tag of £249.99.
