Google Now Features Debut On Desktop & Mobile Search

Google-IO-keynote

Google officially announced that some of its Google Now features will be making their way to its desktop client as well as its mobile search applications, back in May at its I/O event.

Over the next few days, Google will be rolling out travel information, reservations, calendar events and much, much more through Google Search. This data will be pulled from your Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google+ accounts and then fed into your search page, to produce an answer to your query. You will be able to either type or speak your question in order to instantly receive a response – just like Google Now.

The enquiries that will be available, starting this week, include:

  • Flights: Ask Google “Is my flight on time?” to get info on your upcoming flights and live status on your current flights.
  • Reservations: Ask for “my reservations” to see your dining plans or “my hotel” to get your hotel name and address. With one tap, you can get driving or public transit directions straight there, saving you lots of steps.
  • Purchases: Ask for “my purchases,” and you’ll get the status of your current orders, so you know whether your mom’s birthday present will arrive on time.
  • Plans: Ask Google “What are my plans for tomorrow?” to see a summary of upcoming flights, hotels, restaurant reservations and events—very useful when you’re traveling.
  • Photos: Say “Show me my photos from Thailand” to see the photos you uploaded to Google+. You can also ask for “my photos of sunsets” if you want to show off the shots you’ve taken over the year; Google will try to automatically recognize the type of photo you’re asking for.

The information is delivered specifically for you via a secure encrypted connection and is only visible when you’re signed into your Google account, and the search parameters of the feature are fully customizable, too.

If you don’t want to use the service, you can easily turn it off by clicking the globe icon at the top of the search results page, to temporarily disable it. To turn it off permanently just visit the “Private results” section in search settings.
