Latest ComScore Report Says Android Beats iOS, But Apple Still Tops Samsung In Market Share

Boom, baby.

Boom, baby.

According to the latest report on smartphone subscriber market share from comScore, Apple still tops out over Samsung for market dominance, with both companies showing decent gains. HTC, Motorola, and LG are also in the top five smartphone makers, but lost market share this past quarter.

According to the report, 138.5 million folks in the US owned smartphones during the last three months, a figure that’s 7 percent up from last quarter. That’s almost 60 percent market penetration. I guess these smartphones are kind of popular.

Apple ranks as the top original equipment manufacturer (OEM), with 39.2 percent of US smartphone subscribers, up 1.4 percent from last quarter. Samsung came in second with 22 percent market share, a figure that’s up .6 percent), with HTC pulling in 8.9 percent, Motorola 8.3 percent, and LG showing up with 6.7 percent of the smartphone market in the US.

As for operating systems, Google’s Android ranks as the top platform for smartphones, with a 52 percent market share, though Apple’s iOS share increased by 1.4 percentage points to 39.2 percent of the US market share. Blackberry came in third with 5.1 percent market share, Microsoft hangs on with 3 percent, and Symbian (who?) still owns .5 percent of the US smartphone market.

The survey was sampled from mobile subscribers ages 13 and over, and was completed by MobiLens, an online survey company. It did not include any information on anyone’s secondary devices, only asking about primary mobile usage.
