From Saturday, January 26, you’ll have to ask your carrier to unlock your smartphone if you wish to use it on another network. It will become illegal to do so yourself using unauthorized unlocking methods — even if your contract has run its course and you no longer have a commitment with the original provider.

When Motorola announced its new lineup of RAZR devices, everyone was happy to hear they would also be releasing “developer editions” for those who enjoy tinkering. It was safe to assume these would of course be unlocked devices, but with Motorola you never know. Only now, we do know. Motorola has gone ahead and added the Developer Editions of both the RAZR M and RAZR HD to the list of supported devices over at their Unlock My Device page.

After a sea of broken promises, Motorola has finally launched a dedicated site to unlocking its device bootloaders. Okay, so there are only four devices currently supported, but hey, you have to start somewhere. I can’t help but picture the Android community singing in unison to Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight.”

It all began with a Dream, and that dream led to over 850,000 Android devices now being activated each day. HTC takes us back by announcing unlock bootloader support for the HTC Dream. You heard that right, you can now root Android’s roots. If you happen to have an unrooted Dream laying around and feel like kicking it old school, head over to HTCdev.com and go back to the future — just try not to create a time paradox while your tinkering around.


Today is a good day for ASUS Transformer Prime owners looking to mod their device. As promised, ASUS has released an unlock tool for the Transformer Prime and it is now available for download at ASUS’s site. This will now open the door for custom ROM’s and I’m betting there are some devs hard at work right now getting them ready. Of course unlocking your bootloader also comes at a cost, which ASUS is so apt to convey:
